W etologii określenie "terytorium" odnosi się do każdego obszaru socjologicznego, które zwierzę danego gatunku konsekwentnie broni przeciwko konspekfice. Zwierzęta broniące terytorium w ten sposób są określane jako terytorialne. Terytorialność jest widoczna tylko przez mniejszość gatunkową. Bardziej powszechnie jednostka lub grupa zwierząt będzie miała obszar, który normalnie używa, ale niekoniecznie bronił; nazywa się to zasięg domowy. Zakresy domowe różnych grup zwierząt często pokrywają się lub w obszarach pokrywających się, grupy mają tendencję do unikania się nawzajem, zamiast próbować wydalać się nawzajem. W zasięgu domowym może być obszar główny, którego nie używa żadna inna grupa indywidualna, ale znowu jest to wynik uniknięcia, a nie obrony.
