Hiperbola
W matematyce hiperbola jest rodzajem gładkiej krzywej, leżącej w płaszczyźnie, określonej przez jej właściwości geometryczne lub równań, dla których jest zestawem rozwiązań. Hiperbola ma dwa kawałki, zwane połączonymi elementami lub gałęziami, które są lustrzanymi odbiciami siebie i przypominają dwa nieskończone łuki. Hiperbola jest jednym z czterech rodzajów stożkowych przekrojów utworzonych przez przecięcie płaszczyzny i podwójnego stożka. Jeśli płaszczyzna przecina obie połowy stożka, ale nie przechodzi przez wierzchołek stożka, to stożek jest hiperbola. Hiperbole pojawiają się na wiele sposobów: jako krzywa reprezentująca funkcję w płaszczyźnie kartezjańskiej, jako wygląd okręgu, z którego widać, jako ścieżka, za którą podąża cień wierzchołka zegara słonecznego, kształt kształtu otwartej orbity, takie jak orbita statku kosmicznego podczas grawitacyjnego wspomagania huśtania się planety lub bardziej ogólnie każdego statku kosmicznego przekraczającego prędkość ewakuacji najbliższej planety, jako ścieżka komety jednofunkcyjnej, jako trajektoria rozproszenia cząstki subatomowej, i tak dalej. Każda gałąź hiperboli ma dwa ramiona, które stają się prostsze z centrum hiperboli.
