Od końca zimnej wojny i upadku Związku Radzieckiego w 1991 roku tylko Stany Zjednoczone Ameryki zdają się spełniać kryteria bycia supermocarstwem świata. Alice Lyman Miller definiuje supermocarstwo jako "kraj, który ma zdolność do nadawania dominującej władzy i wpływów na całym świecie, a czasami w więcej niż jednym regionie globu na raz, a więc może w sposób wiarygodny osiągnąć status globalnej hegemonii .
