Medium międzygwiezdne
W astronomii medium międzygwiazdowe jest materią, która istnieje w przestrzeni między systemami gwiezdnymi w galaktyce. We wszystkich fazach medium międzygwiazdowe jest bardzo nietrwałe według standardów naziemnych. W chłodnych, gęstych regionach ISM materia ma przede wszystkim formę molekularną i osiąga gęstość liczbową 106 cząsteczek na cm3. W gorących, rozproszonych regionach ISM materia jest głównie zjonizowana, a gęstość może wynosić zaledwie 10-4 jonów na cm3.
