Najbardziej wewnętrzną tuniką tętnicy lub żyły jest wewnętrzna tunica intima, czyli krótka infima. Składa się z jednej warstwy komórek śródbłonka i jest podparta przez wewnętrzną elastyczną blaszkę. Komórki śródbłonka mają bezpośredni kontakt z przepływem krwi. Tuniki naczyń krwionośnych to 3 warstwy: wewnętrzna, środkowa i zewnętrzna warstwa, nazywana odpowiednio, tunica intima, środkową tunikę i tunelę adventitia. Jeśli chodzi o rozwarstwienie, można oddzielić warstwę wewnętrzną od środka za pomocą małej maceracji lub można ją odciąć w małych kawałkach; ale ze względu na swoją kruchość nie można jej oddzielić jako kompletnej membrany. Jest to grzywna, przezroczysta, bezbarwna struktura, która jest bardzo elastyczna, a po śmierci jest często splotowana w zmarszczki podłużne. Wewnętrzna powłoka składa się z: ▪ warstwy śródbłonka chirurgicznego, której komórki są wielokątne, owalne lub pęcherzykowe, mają bardzo wyraźne pęcherzyki okrągłe lub owalne. Ten śródbłonek jest wyraźnie widoczny przez barwienie azotanem srebra.

The tunica intima, or intima for short, is the innermost tunica of an artery or vein. It is made up of one layer of endothelial cells and is supported by an internal elastic lamina. The endothelial cells are in direct contact with the blood flow. The tunicae of blood vessels are 3 layers: an inner, middle, and outer layer that are called, respectively, the tunica intima, the tunica media, and the tunica adventitia. Regarding dissection, the inner coat can be separated from the middle by a little maceration, or it may be stripped off in small pieces; but, on account of its friability, it cannot be separated as a complete membrane. It is a fine, transparent, colorless structure which is highly elastic, and, after death, is commonly corrugated into longitudinal wrinkles. The inner coat consists of: ▪ A layer of pavement endothelium, the cells of which are polygonal, oval, or fusiform, and have very distinct round or oval nuclei. This endothelium is brought into view most distinctly by staining with silver nitrate.
