Wsuwacz wyposażony jest w krzywkę, która umożliwia swobodne przemieszczanie urządzenia w jednym kierunku i mocne uchwycenie liny przy ciągnięciu w kierunku przeciwnym. Aby zapobiec przypadkowemu wypadnięciu liny przez przypadek, mechanizm rozmieszczania lub wyzwalania są uruchamiane. Wstążka jest najpierw przymocowana do wiązki wspinacza przez kawałek tkaniny lub pasa, a następnie jest przymocowany do liny i zablokowany. W przypadku wspinania się na ustalonej sznurze na przykład na kotwicy śnieżne na stromym zboczu, stosuje się tylko jeden wieńcowy, trzymając drugą rękę za trzymającą topór lodowy. Jumaring, nazywany także żonglowaniem, jest miejscem, w którym drugi arywista używa wznoszących się wzniesień, aby wspinać się po liny zamiast wspinać się bezpośrednio na skałę.
