Keloid jest tworzeniem blizny, która, w zależności od jej dojrzałości, składa się głównie z kolagenu typu III lub typu I. Jest to wynikiem wzrostu przerostu tkanki granulacyjnej w miejscu uzdrawionego uszkodzenia skóry, które następnie powoli zastępuje się kolagenem typu 1.
