Lac jest szkarłatnym żywicowym wydzielaniem wielu gatunków owadów, a mianowicie niektóre gatunki z rodzaju Metatachardia, Laccifer, Tachordiella, Austrotacharidia, Afrotachardina i Tachardina z nadrodziny Coccoidea, z których najczęściej hodowanymi gatunkami są Kerria lacca. Wspomniane rodziny to niektóre z 28 rodzin owadów i łusek meblowych obejmujących dużą grupę około 8 000 opisanych gatunków owadów ssących, z których kilka produkuje podobne naturalne produkty. Tysiące tych małych owadów kolonizują gałęzie odpowiednich drzew gospodyń i wydzielają żywiczny pigment. Powleczone gałęzie drzew gospodarza są cięte i zbierane jako kij. Zebraną pałkę rozdrobniono i przesiano w celu usunięcia zanieczyszczeń. Przesiewany materiał wielokrotnie przemywa się w celu usunięcia części owadów i innego rozpuszczalnego materiału. Uzyskany produkt jest znany jako seedlac. Nasiona prefiksu odnosi się do jego kształtu. Seedlac, który nadal zawiera 3-5% zanieczyszczeń, jest przetwarzany w szelak przez obróbkę cieplną lub ekstrakcję rozpuszczalnikiem.
