Szkoła łacińska była szkołą gramofonową z XIV do XVI wieku, choć ostatnia z nich była znacznie bardziej powszechna w Anglii. Nacisk został położony, jak wskazuje nazwa, na naukę korzystania z języka łacińskiego. Edukacja w łacińskich szkołach kładła duży nacisk na skomplikowaną gramatykę języka łacińskiego, początkowo w średniowiecznej formie łacińskiej. Gramatyka była najbardziej podstawową częścią trivium i sztuki liberalnej - w artystycznych personifikacjach Atrybutem Grammar była brzoza brzozowa. Dlatego też dzieci zwykle nie uczęszczały do szkół łacińskich, zwłaszcza jeśli spodziewano się kariery w kościele. Mimo, że szkoły łacińskie istniały w wielu częściach Europy w XIV wieku i były bardziej otwarte na świeckość, zanim Kościół zezwolił na łacińskie szkoły wyłącznie w celu kształcenia tych, którzy kiedyś zostali duchownymi. Szkoły łacińskie zaczęły rozwijać, aby odzwierciedlić renesansowy humanizm około lat czterdziestych.
