Limerencja jest mimowolnym stanem umysłu, wynikającym z romantycznej atrakcyjności innej osoby połączonej z przytłaczającą, obsesyjną potrzebą odwzajemnienia uczuć. Psycholog Dorothy Tennov wymyślił pojęcie "limerence" w swojej książce Love and Limerence z 1979 roku: Doświadczenie bytu w miłości, aby opisać koncepcję, która wyrosła z jej pracy w połowie lat sześćdziesiątych, kiedy rozmawiała z ponad 500 osobami na temat z miłości. Niedawno określono limerencję w odniesieniu do zaburzeń obsesyjno-kompulsywnych jako "mimowolnego stanu interpersonalnego, który obejmuje niepożądane, obsesyjne i kompulsywne myśli, uczucia i zachowania, które są uzależnione od postrzeganej emocjonalnej odwzajemnienia z przedmiotu zainteresowania".
