Termin Listserv został użyty do nawiązania do kilku wczesnych aplikacji do elektronicznej listy mailingowej, umożliwiających nadawcy wysyłanie jednego e-maila do listy, a następnie przezroczystego wysłania go na adresy abonentów listy. Oryginalne oprogramowanie Listerv, Bitnic Listserv, umożliwiło implementację list dyskusyjnych na komputerach głównych IBM VM i zostało opracowane przez Irafiego, Daniela Obersta i Ricky Hernandez w 1984 roku. Ta usługa mailingowa była znana jako Listserv @ Bitnic i szybko stała się kluczową usługi w sieci BITNET. Dostarczył funkcjonalność podobną do algorytmu Sendmaila UNIX i, podobnie jak w przypadku Sendmail, subskrypcje były zarządzane ręcznie. W 1986 roku Éric Thomas opracował niezależną aplikację, pierwotnie nazwaną "Revised Listserv", która była pierwszą zautomatyzowaną aplikacją do zarządzania listą adresową. Przed poprawioną listą dyskusyjną listy adresów e-mail były zarządzane ręcznie.
