Melatonina
Melatonina i / ˌmɛlətoʊnɪn /, znany chemicznie jako N-acetylo-5-metoksytryptamina, jest hormonem występującym u zwierząt, roślin i mikrobów. U zwierząt tempo krążenia melatoniny zmienia się w cyklu dziennym, co pozwala na porywanie rytmów okołodobowych kilku funkcji biologicznych. Wiele skutków biologicznych melatoniny wytwarza się poprzez aktywację receptorów melatoniny, inne zaś ze względu na swoją rolę jako wszechobecny i silny przeciwutleniacz, ze szczególną rolę w ochronie DNA jądrowego i mitochondrialnego. Pełne efekty długookresowej egzogennej suplementacji u ludzi nie zostały jeszcze ustalone. Melatonina jest klasyfikowana przez amerykańską agencję ds. Żywności i leków jako suplement diety i nie jest regulowany jako lek farmaceutyczny. W 2007 r. Europejska Agencja Leków wydała pozwolenie na dopuszczenie leku wydawanego na receptę i wydanie melatoniny o ustalonym czasie, przeznaczonym wyłącznie dla osób w wieku 55 lat, pomimo niewielkich efektów, aw Australii w 2009 r.
