Meristem
Meristem jest tkanka w większości roślin zawierających niezidentyfikowane komórki, znalezione w strefach rośliny, w których może dojść do wzrostu. Komórki merystematyczne tworzą różne narządy rośliny i utrzymują roślinę. Zerwanie merystemu pędowego powoduje powstanie narządów takich jak liście i kwiaty, podczas gdy merystem korzenia wierzchołka dostarcza komórek merystematycznych do przyszłego wzrostu korzeni. SAM i komórki RAM dzielą się szybko i są uważane za nieokreślone, ponieważ nie posiadają określonego statusu końcowego. W tym sensie komórki merystematyczne są często porównywane z komórkami macierzystymi u zwierząt, które mają analogiczne zachowanie i funkcję. Termin meristem został po raz pierwszy użyty w 1858 przez Karl Wilhelma von Nägeli w jego książce Beiträge zur Wissenschaftlichen Botanik.
