Spajanie metaliczne stanowi elektrostatyczne siły przyciągające pomiędzy delokalizowanymi elektronami, zwanymi elektronami przewodzącymi, gromadzonymi w obłoku elektronów i dodatnio naładowanymi jonami metali. Rozumiejąc się jako dzielenie "wolnych" elektronów wśród siatki dodatnio naładowanych jonów, wiązanie metaliczne jest czasami porównywane ze stopami soli; jednak ta uproszczona analogia jest użyteczna dla bardzo niewielu metali. W bardziej kwantowo-mechanicznym spojrzeniu, elektrony przewodzące dzielą swoją gęstość na wszystkie atomy, które działają jako jednostki obojętne. Metaliczne wiązania stanowią wiele właściwości fizycznych metali, takich jak wytrzymałość, ciągliwość, przewodność cieplna i elektryczna, nieprzezroczystość i połysk. Chociaż termin "wiązanie metalowe" jest często używany równolegle do terminu "wiązanie kowalencyjne", to bardziej precyzyjne jest użycie terminu metalowe, ponieważ ten rodzaj wiązania ma charakter zbiorowy, a pojedyncze "metalowe wiązanie" pomiędzy dwoma nie ma jasnych atomów. Spajanie metaliczne nie jest jedynym rodzajem wiązania chemicznego metalową puszką, nawet jako czysta substancja.
