Oczyszczacz śródlądowy
Oczyszczacz śródpolny jest urządzeniem stosowanym do produkcji mąki w celu usunięcia łusek z jądra pszenicy. Został opracowany w Minnesocie przez Edmund LaCroix, francuski wynalazca wynajęty przez Cadwallader C. Washburn i George Christian z młyna Washburn "A". Został opracowany z myślą o uzupełnieniu techniki walcowania nawozów z końca XIX wieku, w której zamiast żniwnych kamieni szlifierskich użyto rolkowanych metalowych rolek do szlifowania pszenicy w mąkę. W tym procesie stosowano oczyszczacz śródpolowy, aby oddzielić otręby od użytecznej części mąki. Maszyna rozwinięta przez LaCroix przeszła częściowo mielone młyny przez ekran, a strumień powietrza wypuścił cząsteczki otręby. Proces ten był stosowany, ponieważ pszenica ozima, siewna jesienią i zbierana wcześnie w następnym latem nie była możliwa do wzrostu w Minnesocie. Wiosną wiosną wysiano na wiosnę i zebrano pod koniec lata. Może to być uprawiane przez rolników w Minnesocie, ale konwencjonalne techniki mielenia ziarna między kamieniami młyńskimi kończyły się produkcją ciemniejszej mąki niż wymagali konsumenci. Trudno też było dokładnie wymieszać gluten i skrobię.
