Minimalizm opisuje ruchy w różnych formach sztuki i wzornictwa, zwłaszcza sztuki wizualnej i muzyce, gdzie praca ma na celu ujawnienie istoty, zasadniczych lub tożsamości podmiotu poprzez eliminację wszystkich nieistotnych form, cech lub pojęć. Jest zakorzeniony w redukcyjnych aspektach modernizmu i często jest interpretowany jako reakcja na abstrakcyjny ekspresjonizm i most do postminimalnych praktyk artystycznych.
