Modernizm to ruch filozoficzny, który wraz z tendencjami i zmianami kulturowymi wynikał z szeroko zakrojonych i daleko idących przekształceń społeczeństwa zachodniego w przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Wśród czynników, które kształtowały Modernizm, było rozwój nowoczesnych społeczeństw przemysłowych i szybki rozwój miast, a następnie groźba pierwszej wojny światowej. Modernizm odrzucił także pewność oświecenia, a wielu modernistów odrzucało wierzenia religijne. Modernizm obejmuje ogół działań i twórczości tych, którzy czuli tradycyjne formy sztuki, architektury, literatury, wiary religijnej, filozofii, organizacji społecznych i codziennych czynności, które stały się przestarzałe w nowym środowisku gospodarczym, społecznym i politycznym wschodzącego uprzemysłowionego świata.
