Polaryzacja w stosunkach międzynarodowych to jeden z rozmaitych sposobów podziału władzy w system międzynarodowy. Opisuje charakter systemu międzynarodowego w danym okresie. Można wyróżnić cztery typy systemów: unipolarność, dwubiegunowość, potrójność i wielobiegość dla czterech lub więcej centrów władzy. Typ systemu jest całkowicie zależny od rozkładu mocy i wpływu stanów w regionie lub na całym świecie. Powszechnie uważa się, że teoretycy stosunków międzynarodowych uważają, że system międzynarodowy po okresie zimna wojny jest unipolarny: wydatki na obronę w Stanach Zjednoczonych są "blisko połową globalnych wydatków wojskowych; marynarka wojenna błękitnopłetwego, przewyższająca wszystkie inne połączone; szansa na świetne pierwsze uderzenie nuklearne nad jego niegdysiejszym wrogiem, Rosja; budżet badań i rozwoju w dziedzinie obronności, który wynosi 80 procent łącznych nakładów na obronę jego najbardziej oczywistego przyszłego konkurenta, Chin; i niezrównane globalne możliwości projekcji. "
