Neologizm to nazwa nowo wymyślonego określenia, słowa lub frazy, które mogą być w trakcie wprowadzania wspólnego użytku, ale nie zostało jeszcze przyjęte do głównego nurtu języka. Neologizmy są często bezpośrednio związane z określoną osobą, publikacją, okresem lub wydarzeniem. Neolexia jest synonimem tego. Pojęcie neologizm jest po raz pierwszy poświadczone w języku angielskim w 1772 roku, zapożyczone z francuskiego néologisme. Neologizm może być także nowym użyciem istniejącego słowa, czasem nazywanego rozszerzeniem semantycznym. Jest to odrębne od idiolety osoby, unikalnych wzorów słownictwa, gramatyki i wymowy. W psychiatrii określenie neologizm służy do opisu użycia słów mających znaczenie tylko dla osoby, która je używa, niezależnie od ich wspólnego znaczenia. Ta tendencja jest uważana za normalną u dzieci, ale u dorosłych może to być objaw psychopatii lub zaburzenia myślenia. Osoby z autyzmem mogą tworzyć neologizmy. Ponadto stosowanie neologizmów może być związane z afazją nabytej po uszkodzeniu mózgu spowodowanym udarem lub urazem głowy. W teologii neologizm jest stosunkowo nową doktryną.
