Substancje nerwowe są klasą organicznych związków zawierających fosfor, które zakłócają mechanizm, za pomocą którego nerwy przekazują wiadomości organom. Zatrucie przez czynnik nerwowy prowadzi do skurczu uczniów, wydzielanie dużych ilości, drgawki, moczowe oddawanie moczu i wypróżnianie, a ewentualna śmierć po udarze, gdy kontrola nad mięśniami oddechowymi jest tracona. Niektóre środki nerwowe są łatwo odparowywane lub aerozolowane, a głównym portalem wnikającym do organizmu jest układ oddechowy.
