Prawo Newtona o powszechnej grawitacji
Prawo uniwersalnej grawitacji Newtona stwierdza, że każde dwa ciała we wszechświecie przyciągają się do siebie siłą, która jest wprost proporcjonalna do produktu ich mas i odwrotnie proporcjonalna do kwadratu odległości między nimi. Jest to ogólne prawo fizyczne pochodzące z obserwacji empirycznych przez to, co Isaac Newton nazwał indukcją. Jest to część mechaniki klasycznej i została sformułowana w twórczości Newtona Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, opublikowana po raz pierwszy 5 lipca 1687 r. W języku współczesnym prawo określa następujące założenia: Zakładając, że jednostki SI, F mierzy się w nowonarodzonych, m1 i m2 w kilogramach , rw metrach, a stała G wynosi w przybliżeniu 6.674 × 10-11 N m2 kg-2. Wartość stałej G została najpierw dokładnie określona na podstawie wyników eksperymentu Cavendisha przeprowadzonego przez brytyjskiego naukowca Henry Cavendish w roku 1798, chociaż Cavendish sam nie obliczył wartości liczbowej dla G. Ten eksperyment był także pierwszym testem teorii Newtona grawitacja między masami w laboratorium.
