Definicja operacyjna jest wynikiem procesu operacyjnego i służy określeniu czegoś w kategoriach procesu niezbędnego do określenia jego istnienia, czasu trwania i ilości. Ponieważ stopień uruchomienia może się różnić, może to prowadzić do mniej lub bardziej operacyjnej definicji. Oczywiście, włączenie momentu, w którym można zacząć odczytywać numery na skali, uczyniłoby to w pełni definicją operacyjną. Niemniej jednak w przeciwieństwie do tych czysto teoretycznych definicji.
