Paleocen
Paleoceń lub Palaeocen, "dawny niedawny", jest epoką geologiczną trwającą od około 66 do 56 milionów lat temu. Jest to pierwsza epoka okresu Palaeogene w nowoczesnej Kaucji. Podobnie jak w wielu epokach geologicznych, warstwy, które definiują początek i koniec epoki, są dobrze zidentyfikowane, ale dokładne wieki pozostają niepewne. Epoka epoki paleocenu obejmuje dwa główne wydarzenia z historii Ziemi. Zaczęło się od masowej eksterminacji pod koniec okresu kredowego, znanego jako granica kredy-paleogen. Był to czas oznaczony zanikiem dinozaurów innych niż ptaki, gigantycznych gadów morskich i wielu innych fauny i flory. Umieranie dinozaurów pozostawiało niewykorzystane nisze ekologiczne na całym świecie. Kończyło się paleoceniczno-eocenem maksymalną temperaturą. Był to geologicznie krótki odstęp, charakteryzujący się skrajnymi zmianami klimatu i emisji dwutlenku węgla. Nazwa "paleocen" pochodzi od grecku i odnosi się do "starej" "nowej" fauny, która powstała w epoce.
