Pegmatyt to holocrystaliczna, inwazyjna skała ze stopu magmowego, złożona z kryształów fenoidowych, zwykle większych niż 2,5 cm; takie skały są określane jako pegmatitic. Większość pegmatytów składa się z kwarcu, skaleń i miki, o podobnej podstawowej kompozycji jak granit. Znane są bardziej złożone składniki pośrednie i pegmaty maficzne zawierające amfibol, skaleń Ca-plagioklazów, piroksen, spieniaczki i inne niezwykłe minerały, które znajdują się w rekrystalizowanych strefach i apophysach związanych z dużymi warstwowymi wkradaniami. Kryształowy rozmiar jest najbardziej uderzającą cechą pegmatytów, z kryształami zwykle większymi niż 5 cm. Odkryto pojedyncze kryształki o długości ponad 10 metrów, a wiele z największych kryształów świata znaleziono w pegmatytach. Obejmują one, spodumen, mikrolinę, beryl i turmalinę. Podobnie, struktura i forma kryształów w skałkach pegmatystycznych mogą być podejmowane w ekstremalnych rozmiarach i doskonałości. Skaleń w pegmatyt może wykazywać przesadne i doskonałe układy bliźniacze, blaszki rozciągające, a gdy dotknięto hydrousy krystalizacją, znana jest makroskopowa struktura graficzna ze skalą skaleni i kwarcu.
