Koło Pelton jest turbiną impulsową. Został wynaleziony przez Lestera Allana Peltona w latach siedemdziesiątych XIX wieku. Koło Pelton wyciąga energię z impulsu poruszającej się wody, w przeciwieństwie do martwej masy wody, jak tradycyjne koło wodne. Wiele różnych turbin impulsowych istniało przed projektem Peltona, ale były one mniej wydajne niż projekt Peltona. Woda opuszczająca te koła zwykle miała dużą prędkość, przenosząc w ten sposób dużą część energii dynamicznej doprowadzanej do kół. Geometria łopatek Peltona została zaprojektowana tak, że gdy obręcz biegła przy prędkości ½ szybkości strumienia wody, woda opuściła koło z niewielką prędkością; a więc jego projekt wydobywał niemal całą energię impulsową wody - co pozwoliło na bardzo wydajną turbinę.
