Pentarchy
"Pentarchy" jest terminem w chrześcijaństwie dla idei uniwersalnej władzy nad całym chrześcijaństwem przez szefów pięciu największych widowisk episkopalnych Imperium Rzymskiego: Rzymu, Konstantynopola, Aleksandrii, Antiochii i Jerozolimy. Chodziło o to ze względu na polityczne i kościelne znaczenie tych pięciu widzi, ale pojęcie ich uniwersalnej i wyłącznej autorytet był mocno związany z administracyjną strukturą Imperium Rzymskiego. Idea pięciokąta została po raz pierwszy wyrażona konkretnie w prawie cesarza Justyniana I, zwłaszcza w Novella 131. Sobór Quinisext z 692 dał formalne uznanie i zaszeregował postrzeganie w celu dominacji. Zwłaszcza po Quinisext pentarchy były co najmniej filozoficznie akceptowane we wschodnim chrześcijaństwie, ale generalnie nie na Zachodzie, które odrzuciło Radę. Im większa władza widzi w relacji do innych, była przywiązana do ich politycznej i kościelnej roli; wszystkie były zlokalizowane w ważnych miastach i regionach Imperium Rzymskiego i były ważnymi ośrodkami Kościoła chrześcijańskiego.
