W językoznawstwie periphrasis jest urządzeniem, w którym znaczenie gramatyczne wyrażane jest przez jeden lub więcej wolnych morfemów, zamiast przez przynależności do wiązań lub pochodzenie. Postacie perifrastyczne są analityczne, podczas gdy brak periphrasis jest cechą syntezy. Choć periphrasis dotyczy wszystkich kategorii składni, jest najbardziej widoczny z czasownikiem catenae.
