Periplus
Periplus jest łacińską greckim słowem περίπλους, dosłownie "żaglowcem". Obydwa segmenty, periologiczne i pluralistyczne były niezależne: starożytny grecki mówca rozumiał to słowo dosłownie; rozwinęło się jednak kilka specjalistycznych znaczeń, z których jeden stał się standardowym terminem w starożytnej nawigacji Fenicjan, Greków i Rzymian. Periplus był dokumentem rękopisu, który wymienił porty i przybrzeżne punkty orientacyjne, z przybliżonymi interwencjami, że kapitan statku mógłby znaleźć się wzdłuż brzegu. Służył temu samemu celowi, co późniejsze rzymskie tory turystyczne przystanek drogowych; jednak greccy nawigatorzy dodali różne notatki, które gdyby byli profesjonalnymi geografikami, stały się częścią ich własnych dodatków do geografii greckiej. W tym sensie periplus był logiem. Forma periplus jest przynajmniej tak stara, jak najwcześniejszy grecki historyk, Ionian Hecataeus z Miletu. Prace Herodota i Thucydidesów zawierają fragmenty, które wydają się być oparte na peripli.
