Permian jest okresem geologicznym i systemem, który rozciąga się od 298,9 ± 0,2 do 252,2 ± 0,5 miliona lat temu. Jest to ostatni okres epoki paleozoicznej, w okresie karbonu i poprzedzający triasowy okres epoki mezozoiku. Pojęcie Permian zostało wprowadzone w 1841 przez geologa Sir Roderick Murchison, który nazwał go po starożytnym Królestwie Permia. Permian obserwował dywersyfikację wczesnych amniotów do przodków grup ssaków, żółwi, lepidozaurów i archosaurów. W tym czasie świat był zdominowany przez jednego superkontynentu, znanego pod nazwą Pangea, w otoczeniu globalnego oceanu zwanego Panthalassa. Rozległe lasy deszczowe Karbonu zniknęły, pozostawiając za sobą ogromne obszary suchej pustyni w obrębie kontynentalnego wnętrza. Gady, które lepiej radzą sobie z tymi warunkami suszenia, wzrosły do dominacji w miejsce ich płazów przodków. Okres Permian zakończył się największym masowym wyginięciem w historii Ziemi, w którym zmarło blisko 90% gatunków morskich i 70% gatunków lądowych.
