Polinezja jest podregion Oceania, składająca się z ponad 1000 wysp rozrzuconych po centralnym i południowym Oceanie Spokojnym. Rdzenni mieszkańcy wysp Polinezji nazywają Polinezczykami i mają podobne cechy, w tym język, kulturę i wierzenia. W przeszłości byli doświadczonymi marynarzami i gwiazdami, które poruszały się w nocy. Termin "Polinezja" został po raz pierwszy użyty w 1756 roku przez francuskiego pisarza Charlesa de Brossesa i pierwotnie zastosowany do wszystkich wysp Pacyfiku. W 1831 roku Jules Dumont d'Urville zaproponował ograniczenie jego wykorzystania podczas wykładu dla Geograficznego Towarzystwa Paryskiego.
