Poliuretan
Poliuretan to polimer złożony z łańcucha jednostek organicznych połączonych wiązaniami karbaminianowymi. Chociaż większość poliuretanów stanowi polimery termoutwardzalne, które nie topią się po podgrzaniu, dostępne są także termoplastyczne poliuretany. Polimery poliuretanowe są tradycyjnie i najczęściej tworzone przez reakcję diolu lub poliizocyjanianu z poliolem. Zarówno izocyjaniany jak i poliole stosowane do wytwarzania poliuretanów zawierają średnio dwie lub więcej grup funkcyjnych na cząsteczkę. Warto zauważyć, że ostatnio podjęto starania zmierzające do zminimalizowania użycia izocyjanianów do syntezy poliuretanów, ponieważ izocyjaniany powodują poważne problemy z toksycznością. Niedawno opracowane poliuretany na bazie izocyjanianu są nową klasą polimerów poliuretanowych w celu złagodzenia problemów zdrowotnych i środowiskowych. Produkty poliuretanowe często nazywają się po prostu "uretanami", ale nie należy ich mylić z karbaminianem etylu, który nazywa się również uretanem. Poliuretany nie zawierają ani nie są wytwarzane z karbaminianu etylowego.
