Słowo pochodzi od greckiego ἀξίωμα (āxīoma) "tego, co według mnie uważa za godne lub dopasowane" lub "co najwyraźniej wyraża się". Zgodnie z nowoczesną logiką aksjomat jest po prostu założeniem lub punktem wyjścia do rozumowania. Aksjom definiują i wyznaczają obszar analizy; względna prawda aksjomatu jest uważana za pewnik w danej dziedzinie analizy i służy jako punkt wyjścia do wyprowadzenia i inferowania innych prawd względnych.
