Rak in situ
Rak in situ znany także jako nowotwór in situ jest grupą nieprawidłowych komórek. Chociaż są to postacie nowotworu, to kontrowersje dotyczą, jeśli spełniają próg klasyfikacji jako raka. Ten kontrowersje zależy również od konkretnej WNP, o której mowa. Niektórzy nie klasyfikują ich jako raka uznając, że mogą one stać się rakiem. Inni klasyfikują pewne typy jako nieinwazyjną formę raka. Te nieprawidłowe komórki rosną w normalnym miejscu, a więc "in situ". Na przykład rakiem na miejscu skóry, nazywanym także chorobą Bowena, jest gromadzenie się komórek nabłonka dysplastycznego tylko w obrębie naskórka, które nie wnikają do głębszej skóry właściwej. Z tego powodu CIS zazwyczaj nie tworzy guza. Raczej uszkodzenie jest płaskie lub wynika z istniejącej struktury narządu. Niektóre CIS tworzą jednak nowotwory, takie jak w okrężnicy, w pęcherzu lub w piersi. Wiele postaci raka powstaje po postępie zmian CIS. Niektóre formy WNP mają duże prawdopodobieństwo progresji do raka, dlatego też zaleca się usunięcie. W klasyfikacji TNM, rak in situ jest zgłaszany jako TisN0M0.
