Prognoza jest terminem medycznym przewidywania prawdopodobnego wyniku obecnej sytuacji. W przypadku dużych populacji statystycznych szacunki prognostyczne mogą być bardzo dokładne: na przykład stwierdzenie "45% pacjentów z ciężkim wstrząsem septycznym umrze w ciągu 28 dni" można z pewną pewnością stwierdzić, ponieważ wcześniejsze badania wykazały, że odsetek pacjentów zmarł . Jednakże trudno przetłumaczyć to na prognozę dla pojedynczego pacjenta: potrzebne są dodatkowe informacje, aby ustalić, czy pacjent należy do 45%, który umrze, czy do 55%, którzy przeżyją.
