Najbardziej znaczące narracje jego pochodzenia pojawiają się w "Theogenezie" Hesiod, które odnosi się do Prometeusza jako syna Tytana Iapetosa przez Clymene, jednego z Oceanidów. Następnie Hesiod przedstawia Prometheus, jako później nisko wyzywający na wszechpotencję Zeusa.
