Piroksen
Pirokseny są grupą ważnych minerałów inokrzemianowych tworzących skały, występujących w wielu skałach magmowych i metamorficznych. Mają one wspólną strukturę składającą się z pojedynczych łańcuchów tetraadry krzemionkowej i krystalizują one w systemach monoclinicznych i rombowych. Pyrokseny mają ogólny wzór XY (Si, Al) 2O6 (gdzie X oznacza wapń, sód, żelazo + 2 i magnez, rzadziej cynk, mangan i lit, a Y oznacza jony o mniejszych rozmiarach, takie jak chrom, aluminium, żelazo + 3 , magnez, mangan, skand, tytan, wanad, a nawet żelazo + 2). Chociaż substytuty glinu silnie wzbogacają krzem w krzemiany, takie jak skalenia i amfibole, substytucja zachodzi tylko w ograniczonym zakresie w większości pyroksenów. Nazwa piroksen pochodzi od greckich słów na ogień (πυρ) i obcy (ξένος). Pyrokseny były nazwane tak ze względu na ich obecność w lawach wulkanicznych, gdzie czasami są postrzegane jako kryształy osadzone w szkle wulkanicznym; przyjęto, że były one zanieczyszczeniami w szkle, stąd nazwa "pożarnicy". Są to jedynie wczesne formowanie minerałów, które wykrystalizowały przed wybuchem lawy.
