Rozpad promieniotwórczy, znany także jako rozkład jądrowy lub radioaktywność, jest procesem, w wyniku którego jądro niestałego atomu traci energię przez emitowanie promieniowania jonizującego. Materiał, który samorzutnie emituje ten rodzaj promieniowania, który obejmuje emisję cząstek alfa, cząstek beta i promieni gamma - jest uważany za radioaktywny. Istnieje wiele różnych rodzajów rozpadu promieniotwórczego. Zanikający lub utraty energii powoduje, że atom z jednym typem jądra, nazywany radionuklidem rodzicielskim, przekształca się w atom z jądrem w innym stanie lub do innego jądra zawierającego różne liczby protonów i neutronów. Każda z tych produktów jest nuklidem córki.
