Racjonalność jest jakością lub stanem rozsądnym, opartym na faktach lub powodach. Racjonalność oznacza zgodność własnych przekonań z własnymi względami, aby wierzyć lub podawać swoje czyny z powodów działania. "Racjonalność" ma różne specjalistyczne znaczenia w dziedzinie ekonomii, socjologii, psychologii, biologii ewolucyjnej i nauk politycznych. Racjonalna decyzja jest nie tylko uzasadniona, ale również optymalna do osiągnięcia celu lub rozwiązania problemu. Określenie optymalności racjonalnych zachowań wymaga wymiernego sformułowania problemu i kilku kluczowych założeń. Gdy cel lub problem wymaga podjęcia decyzji, współczynniki racjonalności w ilości dostępnych informacji. Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, założenia formułowania i tła są modelem, w którym ma zastosowanie racjonalność. Ilustrując teorię względności racjonalności: jeśli przyjmiemy model, w którym korzystanie jest optymalne, racjonalność jest zrównana z zachowaniami, które są zainteresowane do punktu egoistycznego; mając na uwadze, że jeśli przyjmiemy model, w którym korzysta grupa jest optymalna, to czysto samolubne zachowanie uważa się za nieracjonalne.
