Realizm pośredni jest zasadniczo równoznaczny z przyjętym poglądem percepcji percepcji nauk przyrodniczych, która mówi, że nie możemy i nie mogą postrzegać świata zewnętrznego, tak jak to jest, ale znają tylko nasze pomysły i interpretacje świata. Reprezentatywizm jest jednym z kluczowych założeń kognitywizmu w psychologii. Reprezentatywny realizm zaprzeczy, że "wiedza z pierwszej ręki" jest spójną koncepcją, ponieważ wiedza jest zawsze za pośrednictwem pewnych środków.
