Powielanie jest procesem biologicznym, w wyniku którego powstają nowe "potomstwo" pojedyncze organizmy pochodzące od "rodziców". Powielanie jest podstawową cechą wszystkich znanych życia; każdy indywidualny organizm istnieje w wyniku rozmnażania. Podział komórki bakteryjnej na dwie komórki córki jest przykładem reprodukcji bezpłciowej. Natomiast reprodukcja bezpłciowa nie jest ograniczona do organizmów jednokomórkowych. Większość roślin ma zdolność do rozmnażania się bezobjawowo, a gatunki mrówek Mycocepurus smithii uważa się za rozmnażające się całkowicie za pomocą środków bezpłciowych. Rozmnażanie seksualne zazwyczaj wymaga zaangażowania dwóch osób lub gamet, każda z odmiennych rodzajów płci. Propagowanie organizmów może również nastąpić poprzez klonowanie.
