Samopomocowanie odnosi się do ruchu praw obywatelskich osób z niepełnosprawnością rozwojową, zwanych także niepełnosprawnościami poznawczymi lub intelektualnymi oraz innymi niepełnosprawnymi. Jest to również ważny termin w ruchu praw osób niepełnosprawnych, odnoszący się do osób niepełnosprawnych przechodzących kontrolę nad własnym życiem, w tym odpowiedzialność za własną opiekę w systemie medycznym. Ruch samoobrony polega na tym, że osoby niepełnosprawne mówią same za siebie. Oznacza to, że chociaż osoba niepełnosprawna może powoływać się na wsparcie innych, jednostka jest uprawniona do kontrolowania własnych zasobów i sposobu ich kierowania. Chodzi o to, że mają prawo podejmować decyzje życiowe bez nadmiernego wpływu lub kontroli nad innymi. Osoby z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną często należą do najsłabszych członków społeczeństwa. Mogą żyć w dużych instytucjach lub w mniejszych rezydencjach zwanych domami grupowymi, które są środowiskami skierowanymi na personel, w których rezydenci mają niewielką lub żadną kontrolę nad ich życiem lub z którymi dzielą swoją przestrzeń życiową. Osoby niepełnosprawne intelektualnie są szczególnie narażone na nadużycia ze względu na izolację społeczną i fizyczną.
