Samonaprowadzenie jest rodzajem procesu, w którym zdezorganizowany system istniejących już elementów tworzy zorganizowaną strukturę lub wzorzec w wyniku specyficznych, lokalnych oddziaływań między poszczególnymi komponentami, bez kierunku zewnętrznego. Kiedy konstytutywnymi składnikami są cząsteczki, proces ten określa się mianem samoorganizacji molekularnej. Samo montaż może być klasyfikowany jako statyczny lub dynamiczny. W statycznym samoorganizacji porządkowe postacie stanu tworzą system zbliżający się do równowagi, redukując wolną energię. Jednak w dynamicznym samoorganizacji wzorce istniejących już elementów organizowane przez określone interakcje lokalne nie są powszechnie opisywane jako "samozorganizowane" przez naukowców w powiązanych dyscyplinach. Struktury te są lepiej opisane jako "samoorganizujące się".
