Semimetal
Semimetal jest materiałem z bardzo małym nałożeniem się między dolną krawędzią przewodnictwa a górną krawędzią pasma wartościowości. Według elektronicznej teorii pasma, ciało stałe można klasyfikować jako izolatory, półprzewodniki, półmetale lub metale. W izolatorach i półprzewodnikach wypełniony zespół wartościowości jest oddzielony od pustego pasma przewodzenia przez lukę w paśmie. Dla izolatorów, wielkość luki w paśmie jest większa niż w przypadku półprzewodników. Metale mają częściowo wypełnione pasmo przewodnictwa. Semimetal jest materiałem z bardzo małym nałożeniem się między dolną krawędzią przewodnictwa a górną krawędzią pasma wartościowości. Semimetal nie ma więc luki w paśmie i nieznacznej gęstości stanów na poziomie Fermi. Natomiast metal ma znaczną gęstość stanów na poziomie Fermiego, ponieważ pasmo przewodnictwa jest częściowo wypełnione.
