Wiele teorii społeczno-politycznych zakłada, że socjalizacja stanowi jedynie częściowe wyjaśnienie ludzkich przekonań i zachowań, utrzymując, że agenci nie są "pustymi łupkami" ustalonymi przez swoje środowisko. Badania naukowe dostarczają pewnych dowodów na to, że ludzie mogą być kształtowani przez wpływy społeczne i geny. Badania genetyczne wykazały, że środowisko człowieka oddziałuje z jego genotypem wpływając na wyniki behawioralne.
