Softball to odmiana baseballa, w której gra się większa piłka na mniejszym polu. Został wynaleziony w 1887 r. W Chicago jako gra wewnątrz. Było to w różnym czasie nazywane krytym baseballem, piłem piżmowym, placem zabaw, kulek softbundowych, kociaków i dlatego, że grały też kobiety, baseballa damska. Amerykańskie Stowarzyszenie Piłkarzyki w Ameryce zarządza grą w Stanach Zjednoczonych i sponsoruje roczne wyścigi sekcji i mistrzostwa świata. Konfederacja Światowej Piłki Baseballowej reguluje zasady gry w ponad 110 krajach, w tym Stanach Zjednoczonych i Kanadzie; przed powstaniem WBSC w 2013 r. Międzynarodowa Federacja Piłkarzy Piłkarskich wypełniła tę rolę. W 1996 roku piłka nożna na igrzyskach olimpijskich kobiet stała się sportem letnim, ale w 2005 r. Została ona wyrzucona z gry w 2012 r. Są dwa rodzaje softballów. W najpopularniejszym typie softballu o małym skoku, piłka niekiedy większa niż standardowa 12 cali, musi znajdować się na swojej drodze do ciasta; w drużynie jest 10 graczy; zabijanie i kradzież.
