Diagnostyczna sonografia jest ultrasonograficzną techniką obrazowania diagnostycznego stosowaną do wizualizacji wewnętrznych struktur ciała, w tym ścięgien, mięśni, stawów, naczyń i narządów wewnętrznych umożliwiających patologię lub uszkodzenie. Praktyka badania kobiet w ciąży za pomocą ultrasonografii nazywa się ultrasonografią położniczą i jest szeroko stosowana.
