Sputnik 1 (rosyjski: "Спутник-1" Rosyjska wymowa:, "Satellite-1", ПС-1 (PS-1, tj. "Простейший Спутник-1", lub Elementary Satellite-1)) był pierwszym sztucznym satelitą Ziemi. Była to 58 cm (23 cale) średnicy polerowanej metalowej kuli, z czterema zewnętrznymi antenami radiowymi do nadawania impulsów radiowych. Związek Radziecki uruchomił go w eliptycznej niskiej orbicie Ziemi 4 października 1957 r. Widoczne było to wokół Ziemi, a jej impulsy radiowe były wykrywalne. Sukces niespodzianki wytrącił się z kryzysu amerykańskiego Sputnika i wywołał wyścig kosmiczny, część większej zimnej wojny. Uruchomienie zapoczątkowało nowe wydarzenia polityczne, wojskowe, technologiczne i naukowe. Sputnik dostarczył naukowcom cenne informacje. Gęstość górnej atmosfery można było wywnioskować na podstawie jej oporu na orbicie, a propagacja jej sygnałów radiowych dała informacje o jonosferze. Sputnik 1 został uruchomiony podczas Międzynarodowego Roku Geofizycznego z terenu nr 1/5, na 5th Tyuratam w Kazachstanie SSR (obecnie w Baikonur Cosmodrome).
