Stannite jest minerałem, siarczkiem miedzi, żelaza i cyny. Wzór chemiczny Cu2FeSnS4. Cynk występuje powszechnie z żelazem i śladem germanu może być obecny. Stannite stosuje się jako rudę cyny, składającą się z około 28% cyny, 13% żelaza, 30% miedzi, 30% siarki w masie. Znajduje się w łożyskach zawierających cynę, hydrotermalnych osadów żylnych, występujących w chalkopirytach, sphalerytach, tetraedrycie, arsenopirytze, pirytu, kasytecytanie i wolframicie. Znany również jako rudy metalowej. Nazwa pochodzi od łacińskiego dla cyny: stannum. Po raz pierwszy został opisany w 1797 roku za wystąpienie w Wheal Rock, św. Agnes, w Kornwalii w Anglii.
