Podgatunki
W klasyfikacji biologicznej podgatunki są albo taksonomiczną grupą podporządkowaną gatunkowi, albo taksonomiczną jednostką w tej klasie. Zgodnie z Międzynarodowym kodeksem nomenklatury na glony, grzyby i rośliny można wymienić inne niespotykane szeregi, takie jak odmiana. W bakteriologii istnieją zalecenia, ale nie rygorystyczne wymagania rozpoznawania innych ważnych rangi niesłyszących. Taxonomista decyduje, czy uznać podgatunki, czy nie. Wspólnym sposobem na podjęcie decyzji jest to, że organizmy należące do różnych podgatunków tego samego gatunku są zdolne do mieszania się i urodzenia potomstwa, ale nie mieszają się z naturą ze względu na izolację geograficzną lub inne czynniki. Różnice między podgatunkami są zazwyczaj mniej wyraźne niż różnice między gatunkami.
