Tellurium jest pierwiastkiem chemicznym o symbolu Te i atomowej liczbie 52. Kruchy, łagodnie toksyczny, rzadki, srebrno-biały metaloid, podobny do cyny, tellur jest chemicznie związany z selenem i siarką. Od czasu do czasu jest on znaleziony w formie rodzimej, jako kryształy elementarne. Tellurium jest znacznie częściej we wszechświecie w całości niż na Ziemi. Jego skrajna rzadkość w skorupie Ziemi, porównywalna do platyny, jest częściowo spowodowana wysoką liczbą atomową, ale także wskutek jej utworzenia lotnego wodorku, który spowodował, że element ten został utracony w przestrzeni jako gaz podczas gorącego tworzenia się mgławic planety. Tellurium zostało odkryte w Austro-Węgierach, w roku 1782 przez Franza-Józefa Müllera von Reichensteina w minerale zawierającym tellur i złoto. Martin Heinrich Klaproth nazwał nowy element w 1798 r. Po łacińskim słowie "ziemia", tellus. Złote minerały telluridowe są najbardziej znaczącymi naturalnymi związkami złota. Nie są one jednak znaczącym handlowym źródłem samego telluru, który zwykle jest wydobywany jako produkt uboczny wytwarzania miedzi i ołowiu.
